New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard a petition seeking a stay on political parties who have distributed or promised free goods to voters before the elections. Meanwhile, the top court has sought a response from the central government on the necessary steps. At the same time, in the midst of the hearing, the top court also made a strong observation about the Election Commission. A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, said that if the Election Commission cannot do anything about the parties distributing free goods, then it is God to save it.

The apex court, while hearing the matter on Tuesday, also asked the Finance Commission whether the unnecessary expenditure in the revenue allocated to states could also be taken into account. In this case, the top court sought the help of the Finance Commission because the Election Commission had categorically denied that it could not do anything on the issue of distribution of free goods on behalf of parties to the voters. While on behalf of the central government, it has been given the responsibility of taking all necessary steps under the legal process.

A bench headed by the CJI of the apex court, while hearing the matter, said that this tradition should be stopped. In such a situation, the court has also sought the views of the Finance Commission in this regard, so that something can be done in this regard. The top court said, "If the Election Commission says that it cannot do anything in the case of freebies, god save it." We suggest that freebies should be controlled. There should be a study on how to do it. The CJI-led bench also included Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Hima Kohli.
