New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India will give its verdict on the petitions challenging the validity of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2018. The Bench of Justice Arun Mishra, Justice Vineet Saran and Justice Ravindra Bhat will pronounce judgment on these petitions.

The Act prohibits the provisions of granting anticipatory bail to an accused arrested, as per the SC-ST Act. The apex court had said in its judgment on 20 March 2018 that arrest cannot be made without investigation under the SC-ST Act. On this, the Central Government had filed a review petition, expressing disagreement on this decision of the two-judge bench of the apex court. In fact, in view of the misuse of SC-ST Act, 1989, the apex court had automatically stayed the FIR and arrest on the complaint received under this law.

The act was then amended to overturn the order of the top court in Parliament, which was challenged in the Supreme Court. There were protests across the country following the Supreme Court's decision on the SC-ST law. In particular, people from the Dalit community protested by closing the market place. After which the government had decided to reverse this decision.
