Lucknow: The Punjab government has refused to hand over the MLA and Mafia don Mukhtar Ansari currently lodged in the Rupnagar jail to the UP government. The Punjab government, by filing an affidavit in the apex court, has refused to give Mukhtar Ansari custody of the UP government. The Punjab government has cited Ansari's health as the reason.

An affidavit filed through the jail superintendent said that Ansari is reportedly battling high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, back pain and skin allergies. Seeking to dismiss the UP government's petition, the Punjab government has said that it is working according to the doctors' opinion. The Punjab government said that there is no pre-conceived conspiracy to keep Ansari out of the grip of UP. The affidavit states that the writ petition of the Uttar Pradesh government is not worth considering, as UP cannot claim a violation of its fundamental right to keep Ansari in custody in Punjab.

The next hearing in the case will be held on February 8 in the apex court. Ansari has 14 criminal cases in UP. The UP court has issued 26 production warrants for Ansari's appearance. But the jail administration has claimed that they did not get 10 warrants. Earlier, on the day of appearing before the UP court, the medical board and doctors of Punjab had advised Ansari to bed rest.
