New Delhi: Supreme Court will hear today a petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind against the law criminalizing triple talaq. A bench headed by Justice NV Ramanna and Ajay Rastogi will hear the petition. The petition said that the top court had invalidated Triple talaq, so the law was not required.

The petition said that going to jail will not help the wife. The punishment for a crime such as reckless death is 2 years and three years for Triple talaq. It may be mentioned that President Ram Nath Kovind had signed the Triple Talaq bill on August 1 (Thursday), after which three times the divorce has come under the category of 'divorce' and punishment of up to three years.

The Triple Talaq or Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 has already been passed in both Houses of Parliament. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 25 even after opposition protests. The opposition demanded that the bill be reviewed by a standing committee before it was passed. The bill was then passed in the Upper House.
