New Delhi: The apex court has upheld the Speaker's decision to disqualify the 17 rebel MLAs from the Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) and the Congress coalition government. The JDS and Congress government in Karnataka fell due to these MLAs becoming rebels and Yeddyurappa of BJP got the opportunity to form the government.

However, the court has rejected the decision of the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, in which they were banned from contesting elections till 2023. Of these, 14 MLAs are from Congress and three MLAs are from JDS. The speaker disqualified the legislators in July on the basis of defection law. When the speaker had disqualified these MLAs, he also said that he cannot contest any election until the term of this assembly ends. This decision of the speaker has been rejected by the Supreme Court.

The legislators had challenged the Speaker's decision in the apex court and appealed to invalidate the decision of disqualification. On the other hand, JDS and Congress also went to the court that the decision to give ineligible agreement should be upheld. These seats are going to be held on December 5. The BJP has 106 MLAs in the 224-seat Karnataka Assembly.
