New Delhi: Former Finance Minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram has received a major setback from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has ordered the CBI custody of Chidambaram continued till 5 September. The apex court said that meanwhile, P Chidambaram's counsel would not seek an early hearing on the bail plea in the sessions court or trial court.

On September 5, the Supreme Court will pronounce its decision on the plea for anticipatory bail in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case. Earlier, P Chidambaram's lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that Tushar Mehta tried to mislead the court yesterday. Singhvi blamed that Tushar Mehta was saying that today 15 days of CBI custody is ending, while the custody will end tomorrow.

Tushar Mehta has said that the bail petition was not filed till the time this order was given. On this, P Chidambaram's lawyer Sibal said in the court that we had informed the court about this. The CBI told the court that now we do not want the custody of P. Chidambaram. Let us tell you that Chidambaram has been on CBI remand ever since he was arrested on August 21 in INX Media case.
