KOLKATA:Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, led one of the three arms of the BJP marching towards the state secretariat of Nabanna on Tuesday afternoon, but they were stopped by a sizable police force well in advance of the secretariat. This setback prevented the BJP's "march to the West Bengal secretariat" against various corruption issues from even getting off the ground.

A sizable police presence stopped the arm led by Adhikari and the party's Lok Sabha member Locket Chatterjee at the entrance to the Vidyasagar Bridge, also known as the Second Hooghly Bridge, which connects Kolkata with Mandirtala in the neighbouring Howrah district, where the state secretariat of Nabanna is located. Suvendu Adhikari and Locket Chatterjee were both arrested and placed in the jail van following an initial confrontation with the police personnel there.

Adhikari said that the female police officers were sent there on purpose and specifically to deal with him. Adhikari was also seen shouting at the women police officials trying to put him in a prison van. "You are a lady. Do not touch my body," Adhikari was heard shouting.
Later, Adhikari and Chatterjee were both transferred to the Lalbazar Kolkata Police headquarters. Regarding the development, Adhikari has threatened to use the legal system.

Adhikari claimed, "The lady constables were constantly pushing me and they were doing this on the orders of three IPS officers, namely Gyanwant Singh, Akash Magaria, and Suryapratap Yadav. This is not the way to deal with the leader of the opposition.

Interestingly, chief minister Mamata Banerjee left Kolkata on Tuesday on a three-day official trip to the districts of East Midnapore and West Midnapore. Adhikari ridiculed her decision to skip Kolkata, claiming that the chief minister had sent all of the police to halt the BJP rally. Adhikari stated, "She has done this by escaping out of Kolkata.

Firhad Hakim mocked Adhikari, state minister for urban development & municipal affairs and mayor of Kolkata, saying that the opposition leader is using such showmanship since he knows his party doesn't have a large following in West Bengal. "BJP is a worthless party that is surviving mainly by employing some central agencies. There are only leaders and no workers in BJP. A party without any workers can never generate popular support," Hakim said.
