New Delhi:- Swarm, the Internet of Things connectivity provider acquired by SpaceX, will stop selling new devices, according to an email sent to customers earlier this month.

The news appears to be directly related to SpaceX's upcoming expansion into the satellite-to-cell market, with Swarm telling customers that the company plans to offer a version of its low-power M138 modem compatible with SpaceX's direct-cell network.

Swarm said it would continue to support his ongoing VHF communications between Earth and space using the SwarmBEEs satellite constellation, but it looks like it will eventually give in to its parent company's ambitions to connect mobile phones and his IoT devices to its own network.

Founded in 2016 by Sara Spangelo and Ben Longmier, her Swarm came out in 2018 with ambitious plans to launch a satellite network and sell hardware that could turn just about anything into a connected device. The company sold a low-power modem called the Swarm M138 and his IoT product development kit, offering low-bandwidth satellite connectivity for just $5 a month.

The company was acquired by SpaceX in 2021 and remains SpaceX's only acquisition. Longmeyer is currently Senior Director of Satellite Engineering at SpaceX, and Spangelo is Senior Director of Satellite Engineering at SpaceX and co-leader of the Direct to Cell initiative.

SpaceX is best known for its Starlink satellite internet service, but the company announced last year that it would expand into mobile, a huge market, especially in developing countries. Last summer, SpaceX and T-Mobile announced the launch of a new service aimed at bringing his Starlink service to devices on T-Mobile's network. Those efforts are sure to intensify this year, with SpaceX executives saying in March that testing of the service will begin this year.
