Srinagar: The State Investigation Agency (SIA) of Jammu and Kashmir has taken major action against former Hurriyat Conference (HG) chief Syed Ali Geelani in Barjulla, Srinagar. SIA has attached at least 20 properties, including some properties registered in those names. Properties have been attached in various districts of Kashmir on the SIA's probe. Along with this, raids have also been conducted in Budgam, Magam, Pulwama, Awantipora, Kulgam, and Srinagar districts of Kashmir Valley. The Srinagar District Magistrate (DM) had already ordered the sealing of 3 properties of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The order passed by the District Magistrate involved a 2-story residential house registered in the name of Syed Ali Shah Geelani at Barjulla, Srinagar. Notably, the probe agency has identified 188 Jamaat-e-Islami properties in Jammu and Kashmir, which have either been notified or are in the process of being notified for further legal action. Officials have informed that the house is believed to have been bought by Jamaat-e-Islami in the 1990s and was registered in the name of Geelani (JEI). He said Geelani lived in the house till early 2000 and after that, he moved to the Hyderpora area of the city. He passed away in September last year. According to officials, the house was later used as the residence of the Amir (head) of JEI. He said that SIA has also attached another residential house in the Barjula area.

According to officials, this action of SIA is part of the attachment of properties belonging to the banned outfit JEI. Officials told HA that the action was the result of an investigation into an FIR lodged at Batmaloo police station. SIA is probing the matter. He said the move was aimed at plugging the flow of funds for separatist activities and dismantling the network of anti-national elements and terrorists who pose a threat to India's sovereignty.
