DAMASCUS: Early Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike hit and disabled Aleppo airport, according to Syrian state media.

According to the state news agency SANA, citing a military source, "Israel launched an air strike from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, targeting Aleppo International Airport, west of Latakia." According to SANA, the strike caused "material damage" to the airport.

It was not immediately clear whether there were any casualties. Representatives of the Israeli government did not comment. Israel has attacked several targets inside government-controlled areas of Syria in recent years, including airports in Aleppo and Damascus, but it rarely acknowledges the actions or talks about the action.

Israel, however, has acknowledged that it attacks targets of terrorist organizations with links to Iran, including Lebanon's Hezbollah, which has sent thousands of fighters to aid President Assad's forces.

Aleppo was once again severely damaged in the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria last month. Aleppo suffered extensive destruction during the First Syrian Civil War. Since then, several countries have delivered aid shipments to the airport in the city.
