The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan has happily accepted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' words urging the United States to ease its asset ban on the war-torn country.
On Friday, Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted, "We applaud the UN Secretary General's request for the liberation of Afghan capital from the US." The US froze nearly $9 billion in assets belonging to the Afghan central bank, as well as a suspension in financing from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, after the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021.
The financial crisis has resulted in an economic catastrophe and a humanitarian disaster in the country. On Thursday, Guterres asked the US and the World Bank to unfreeze Afghan finances in order to avoid a worsening of "the catastrophe unfolding in Afghanistan."
Mujahid stated that such a post would improve the UN's impartiality as well as the organization's credibility as a world leader in human rights. The US must respond positively to international pressure and free Afghan assets that have been blocked.
