As India stands on the second position of maximum cases of corona in the world, there has been a surge in cases in southern India. Tamil Nadu's overall Covid-19 tally on Sunday crossed the unenviable milestone of 5 lakh cases. With 5,693 new cases coming up in the last 24 hours the state's Covid-19 tally holds at 5,02,759.74 more deaths in the state in a day take the state's Covid-19 death toll to 8,381. The southern Indian state has 47,012 active cases. 5,717 discharges in the last 24 hours took the total number of recoveries to 4,47,366, said the state's health department in its daily bulletin.

There are 168 Covid-19 testing facilities in the state, of which 103 are private ones. As many as 84,308 samples were tested on Sunday, pushing the total number of samples tested so far to 58.88 lakh. Meanwhile, the state capital Chennai clocked 994 new cases, taking its infection count closer to 1.5 lakh mark. Besides, Coimbatore recorded 490 new cases, followed by Salem 309, Thiruvallur 300, Chengalpet 299, Tirupur 291 and Cuddalore 251, the bulletin said.

Recovery rate from corona continues to surge in Telangana

Erode, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Tirunelveli, Vellore and Villupuram logged more than 100 cases. Among the 74 who died of the virus today, 66 had comorbidities. As many as 43 defunct were between the age of 60 and 79, the bulletin said. Seven of the new infections who tested COVID-19 positive were returnees from various States, it said. Of the 8,381 deaths reported till date, 2,976 people were from Chennai.
