CHENNAI: The government of Tamil Nadu has appointed special teams to oversee the paddy procurement in the state. Different sections have been set aside under the supervision of different officers, even though the department of Food and Civil Supplies is the overall entity responsible for overseeing the procurement.
There have been a number of teething issues associated with the purchase of paddy, including insufficient space at the direct procurement centres (DPCs), assessment of the amount of moisture in the paddy, and online verification of the paperwork provided by the farmers who are providing the paddy to these centres, the official said.
There was an excess of paddy produced during the 2022–2023 growing season, and because of many unforeseen events, procurement was delayed but has finally started. The Civil Supplies department has assigned top officials charge in order to conduct proper procurement monitoring.
The monitoring of the paddy procurement in different districts of the state is the responsibility of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) managing director S. Prabhakar, the Tamil Nadu Warehousing Corporation managing director A. Sivagananam, the TNCSC joint managing director K. Karpagam, and the joint registrar of cooperative societies A. Shankar.
Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation is procuring paddy in delta districts while the National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) procure paddy from non- delta districts.
