Chennai: A student named Lavanya was so tortured by school missionaries for opposing Christian conversions in Tamil Nadu that she was forced to commit suicide. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has been consistently raising its voice in the matter and its office bearers and workers protested in Tamil Nadu. The ABVP alleged that its activists protesting in the Lavanya suicide case have been arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police. The arrested ABVP activists include the organisation's national general secretary Nidhi Tripathi. All of them were protesting in Chennai over the Lavanya suicide case.

The ABVP said the action was taken at the behest of the state's ruling 'Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).'Â The ABVP said, "We condemn this action taken by the DMK-led government. You can't use the police to suppress our voices. Until Lavanya gets justice, we will continue to fight this battle.'' Other ABVP activists, including Nidhi Tripathi, protested by burning an effigy of the Tamil Nadu government. Terming the arrest as "illegal,"Â a protest has been planned on Tuesday (January 15, 2022) in front of 'Tamil Nadu House' at Kautilya Marg in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.
The ABVP termed it as the "insensitive and dictatorial" attitude of the DMK government, saying it strongly condemns it. They were protesting outside CM MK Stalin's house. At the same time, the Supreme Court has refused to interfere in the Madras High Court's verdict in the Lavanya suicide case. The Tamil Nadu government had moved the top court challenging the Madras High Court's verdict asking it to get the Lavanya suicide case investigated by the CBI. The apex court also asked the Tamil Nadu government not to make the matter a "matter of prestige."Â The court also said that 'A lot has happened in this case, an investigation is necessary.'Â
