Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu - The relentless heavy rains in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, have triggered flood-like conditions, prompting swift action from local authorities. In response, 696 pregnant women were evacuated as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety, confirmed officials.

The District Collector reported that within the last 48 hours, 142 pregnant women were admitted to various hospitals, successfully delivering their babies.

A team from the Central government assessed the situation in Tirunelveli due to the flooding and heavy rainfall. Concurrently, the Indian Navy conducted rescue missions in the southern parts of Tamil Nadu, deploying helicopters for seven sorties and delivering 3.2 tons of relief materials to inaccessible flood-affected regions, including Srivaikuntam.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin assured the public of the government's proactive measures in response to the alarming weather conditions. He highlighted the unprecedented rainfall in Thoothukudi and mentioned the deployment of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for rescue operations.

Stalin disclosed that over 12,000 individuals have been rescued and accommodated in 14 relief camps. He emphasized the immediate provision of essential supplies to those seeking refuge in these camps.

Moreover, the Chief Minister revealed his plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for additional funds for the southern districts of the state during their recent meeting in Delhi on December 19.

Widespread havoc caused by heavy rain has been witnessed in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari districts. In response, both the state government and the Centre have joined forces in a large-scale rescue and relief operation.

Transport Minister Sivasankar SS expressed hope for the restoration of public transportation within three days in Thoothukudi, signaling progress amidst the ongoing efforts to address the aftermath of the floods.
