CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu tourist department has launched a large-scale campaign to promote adventure tourism, water tourism, and kayaking in the state. It also intends to encourage caravan tourism in all of the state's tourist destinations, such as Mahabalipuram, Kancheepuram, Udhugamandalam, Kodaikanal, and a few more.
There are also proposals to enlist the help of private enterprises to promote tourism under a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model. An internationally renowned consultant has been hired as part of the initiative to increase tourism in the state. Tourism was one of the main topics pushed by Chief Minister M.K.Stalin during his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The government is also in talks with the state's major hospitals to promote medical tourism, particularly in Arabian countries and the United States, where the cost is a drop in the bucket compared to what is charged in these countries. Ma Subramanian, the state's health minister, and M. Mathiventhan, the state's tourism minister, are meeting with key hospital groups to iron out the kinks in medical tourism.
