Tata Motors' Punch has taken the crown as India's top-selling car, overtaking Maruti Suzuki's long-time favorite WagonR by selling over 1,26,000 units between January and July 2024. This remarkable achievement marks a significant shift in India's automotive landscape, signaling the rise of micro SUVs and the growing demand for alternative fuel options.
However, in July, the Punch slipped to fourth place in monthly sales rankings, with Hyundai's Creta taking the lead. Despite this dip, the Punch's overall dominance remains clear, as consumers increasingly lean towards electric and CNG vehicles. In fact, nearly half of Punch's total sales—47%—are made up of electric and CNG variants, demonstrating the car's broad appeal to eco-conscious buyers.
Maruti Suzuki's WagonR, once a leader in this segment, still holds strong due to its CNG variant, which accounts for 45% of its sales. Similarly, CNG has boosted sales of other Maruti models, contributing to 27% of Brezza's sales and an impressive 58% of Ertiga's sales.
The Punch's success can be attributed to the new category it has created as a micro SUV, offering the allure of SUV-like features at a more affordable price point. Auto industry experts emphasize the importance of this multi-fuel approach, catering to diverse consumer needs. "Punch’s ability to offer both electric and CNG variants has allowed it to tap into a wider audience concerned about rising fuel costs," explained an industry analyst.
Dealers have also noted the impact of the Punch's fuel mix on its soaring popularity. A dealer based in Chennai highlighted, "The Punch's sales jumped from just over 79,000 units in January-July 2023 to 1.26 lakh units now, thanks to the introduction of its electric and CNG models."
Vivek Srivatsa, chief commercial officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, proudly announced that the Punch has become the fastest SUV to cross the 4 lakh sales milestone in the SUV category, showcasing its growing dominance in the market.
The Punch’s success with its dual-fuel strategy has caught the attention of other automakers as well. Hyundai's Exter, which debuted in July 2023, has also seen impressive growth, with sales surging from 7,000 units during its launch year to 52,684 units in 2024.
Looking ahead, experts believe that the focus for automakers will be on diversifying fuel options to meet the varied demands of consumers and regulatory environments. The micro SUV segment, in particular, is expected to continue capturing the attention of price-sensitive customers who desire the status and functionality of an SUV without the high costs.
