Hyundai Motor India is set to invest Rs 180 crore in establishing a new Hydrogen Innovation Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras' Thaiyur campus. This facility, designed to advance research in hydrogen technology, will be built on a 65,000 sq ft plot of land on the outskirts of Chennai. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for this project during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave.

The partnership between Hyundai Motor India, the Tamil Nadu state government’s investment promotion agency, and IIT Madras is aimed at promoting the hydrogen ecosystem in India. This initiative aligns with Hyundai Motor India’s goal to position Tamil Nadu as a leading hub for automotive innovation and the development of alternative fuel technologies.

Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting IIT Madras’ role in India's technological advancements. He noted that the Hydrogen Innovation Centre will drive innovations in hydrogen mobility and support startups and researchers in this field.

Hyundai Motor India's Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer, Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting Tamil Nadu's vision for a sustainable alternative fuel ecosystem. He anticipates that the new centre will significantly advance hydrogen mobility in the region.

The Hydrogen Innovation Centre will focus on several key areas, including the development of electrolysers for green hydrogen production, localization of manufacturing, and supply chain enhancements. It will also feature a fuel cell test station and pilot projects using electrolysers and fuel cells.

The centre is projected to be operational by 2026.
