Teaching staff have borne the brunt of economic slowdown in Corona pandemic: Nara Lokesh

Amaravati: TDP national general secretary and MLC Nara Lokesh, in a letter to Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday, on the lines of the package given in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other states in view of the corona virus epidemic, worked in private schools and colleges. Requested to provide financial assistance to the teachers.

Expressing serious concern over suicides by dozens of private teachers in Telugu states, he said, many teachers are reportedly still getting only 60-70 per cent of their salary and there is no clarity on whether the layoffs have been done. When will the teachers be re-employed? Nearly 5 lakh members of the teaching and non-teaching staff working in schools, colleges and universities have borne the brunt of the economic slowdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic since the lockdown began in March 2020.

The TDP leader said there have been several reports in Telugu and English dailies of teachers being forced to sell vegetables, do construction work and do many other types of manual labour. How our society and government have failed to help the future architects of our children. Both the Telugu states have seen dozens of suicides among private teachers due to hardships induced by the Covid. Comparing with other states, Lokesh said Telangana provided financial assistance of Rs 2,000 per month and 25 kg of rice per month to private teachers. Karnataka announced a relief package of Rs 5,000 for primary school teachers. Similarly, on the lines of what other state governments have done, AP should have immediate financial and in-kind transfers to their families in the short term.
