In January, billionaire Elon Musk said it was "absurd" that India does not have a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In a social media post, the Tesla CEO wrote, "At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. The problem is that those with excess power don't want to give it up. India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd. Africa collectively should also have a permanent seat."

Ahead of the country's Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its election manifesto, "Sankalp Patra," in which the party vowed to pursue permanent membership for India on the UNSC. The BJP's manifesto stated, "We are committed to seeking permanent membership in the UN Security Council to elevate India's position in global decision-making." In January, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke about the growing support India is receiving for its bid for a permanent seat on the UNSC. He said, "With each passing year, the world believes that India should have a seat, and I can feel that support... The world doesn't give things easily; sometimes you have to take them."
