BEIJING:  Tesla is recalling 1.68 million vehicles in China due to a potential safety issue with the trunk latches, the country's market regulator announced. The recall will address concerns about the trunk not locking properly, which could potentially affect driver visibility.

The recall, announced late Tuesday, August 6, includes a range of models: imported Model S and Model X vehicles, as well as domestically produced Model 3 and Model Y cars made between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024. Owners will receive a free repair if their trunk latches are found to be faulty.

The problem, as noted by the State Administration for Market Regulation, is that an unsecured trunk could open while driving, which might obstruct the driver's view. Tesla plans to resolve this issue with a remote software update. There has been no indication that this problem has led to any incidents.

China remains a crucial market for Tesla, serving both as a key production hub and a battleground for competition from local electric vehicle manufacturers. Last month, Tesla reported a significant drop in its net income for the second quarter, attributed to declining sales despite price reductions and favorable financing options.

Tesla’s proactive recall highlights the company's commitment to vehicle safety, especially in a market as vital as China. As Tesla continues to expand its footprint and navigate increasing competition from Chinese EV manufacturers, maintaining high safety standards will be crucial. The remote software upgrade is part of Tesla’s broader strategy to address potential issues efficiently and ensure customer confidence. This recall underscores the ongoing need for vigilance and swift action in the evolving automotive landscape.
