Chennai: One of the most well-known brands in the Indian two-wheeler industry is Royal Enfield. With its capable J-series (350cc) and Twins (650cc) range, the homegrown motorcycle manufacturer has been able to dominate the middleweight retro motorcycle market. The company is now planning to launch the brand-new 450cc engine to close the gap and broaden its reach.

Over the past few years, Royal Enfield has experimented with new technologies. The company's iconic Unit Construction Engines (UCE) represented its initial effort to update its product line. But after the introduction of the capable J-series platform (Classic/Meteor/Hunter) and the cutting-edge 650cc parallel-twin engine (Interceptor/Continental GT/Super Meteor), the company began to gain momentum. It is currently preparing to unveil a brand-new 450cc liquid-cooled mill.

It began in 2016 with the debut of the Himalayan. The 411cc, air-and-oil-cooled, SOHC, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine for Royal Enfield's first ADV motorcycle was built from the ground up. The engine (code-named LS410) was praised for its tractability while off-roading but was criticised for lacking power when driving on the highway. The motor has a maximum output of 24.6 horsepower and a maximum torque of 32 Nm.

In order to start a new chapter, Royal Enfield will unveil a brand-new 450cc engine. While the company's tried-and-true air-and-oil-cooled J-series and Twins range depend on it, the contemporary 450cc unit will be the brand's first-ever motor to feature liquid cooling. The single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine is anticipated to produce a peak torque of 45Nm and a maximum power of over 40hp.

Royal Enfield intends to expand its motorcycle lineup with a number of models using the new engine platform, similar to the J-series and Twins range. Along with a cafe racer at a later time, the lineup will initially consist of an ADV, a scrambler, and a roadster.

The 411cc engine in the current LS410 range (Himalayan/Scram 411) was too underpowered to compete with middleweight models from companies like BMW Motorrad, KTM, and Yezdi in the ADV, scrambler, and roadster segments.

With the brand-new 450cc liquid-cooled engine, Royal Enfield hopes to outperform its competitors by providing more power at a lower price.
