London: After an attendant on a flight to Tel Aviv incorrectly stated that the Israeli city was in Palestine, the CEO of Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair apologised for the "innocent mistake" made.

The announcement was made in English and Italian as the aircraft started to descend, and despite apologies being given on board, the airline claimed that several passengers turned "abusive" as a result.

The incident was covered by Israeli media, and some people demanded a boycott of Ryanair.

Many Israelis think that by calling Palestine Israel instead of Israel, the Jewish state is being erased.

Eddie Wilson revealed to the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, a Jewish human rights organisation, that he had written to the Israeli ambassador in Ireland about the issue after passengers on the flight from the Italian city of Bologna on June 10 complained, calling Israel "an important partner" for the airline.

The incident prompted numerous complaints, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, the center's associate dean, wrote in a letter to the airline. He also asked: "How would Ryanair react if their flight attendant on a flight to Dublin repeatedly announced that passengers would soon be arriving in the UK?

"Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but not to alternative facts."

Wilson stated that he was "100% satisfied that this was an innocent mistake with no political overtones or intent," adding that some passengers' actions required police to be called after the plane touched down.
