In the short series "The Comeback Girl," actress Kathryn Hahn will play Joan Rivers. It is in development at Showtime, produced by Warner Bros. Television, Atlas Entertainment and Berlanti Productions, says variety.com.

In order to play Rivers, Hahn will executive produce "The Comeback Girl," which will be directed and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, and written and executive produced by Cosmo Carlson. "The Comeback Girl" was written as a spec script by Carlson, a two-time Black List screenwriter. Richard Suckle and Robert Amidon of Atlas Entertainment were behind the concept, which Suckle and Carlson presented to Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions, who signed on.

Rivers died on September 4 at the age of 81, six days after she stopped breathing during a routine throat endoscopy. She was a trailblazer in the field of stand-up comedy, notably as a woman and in the 1960s, when her popularity began to grow in the New York comedy scene.

In the mid-1960s, she began a series of appearances on "The Tonight Show," which led to her being Johnny Carson's regular guest host on the show in the 1980s. After she moved to the embryonic Fox network for her own show, "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers," the two had a violent spat in 1986. Rivers became not just the first woman to anchor a late-night talk show, but also Carson's rival.

He said he hadn't heard from her, which upset him, and he barred her from appearing on "The Tonight Show." "The Comeback Girl" is mostly set after "The Late Show" was cancelled, which happened to coincide with Rivers' husband (and "Late Show" producer) Edgar Rosenberg's suicide. Hahn was nominated for an Emmy for "WandaVision" and will soon be seen in "The Shrink Next Door" on Apple TV. Rian Johnson's "Knives Out 2" has just wrapped filming.
