Bechets disease or syndrome is a chronic condition caused by an inflammation of the blood vessels. The disease can affect men and women and develop at any age.
Symptoms of Behcet’s disease
Mouth
Mouth sores are usually recurrent and painful and affect almost all patients. They are mostly the first symptom noticed and can occur before any other symptom appears.
Skin
They may have appearances such as coin-shaped nodules that are tender or ulcers that may be either superficial or deep and are painful.
Genital
They can occur on the scrotum or the vulva and can be very painful and leave scars.
Joints
The most affected are the knees, elbows, hips and ankles. Inflammation in the joint can cause swelling, tenderness and redness, but usually does not lead to permanent damage.
Eyes
The inflammation can result in blurry vision, tearing or redness in the eye. Behcets disease may even lead to a vision loss.
Treatment of Behcet’s disease
Corticosteroids are the main treatment. These drugs suppress inflammation and immune function. Colchicine may help with mouth and genital sores. Drug choice depends on the severity of illness.
