The first match of IPL was played on 18 April 2008, in which the Kolkata Knight Riders player scored a century against Royal Challengers Bangalore. McCullum told KKR.com, 'That night in a game of three hours or I would say that in just one and a half hours my life changed completely.'

McCullum is once again joining as KKR coach. He said that the then captain of the team, Sourav Ganguly, also said that now your life will change completely. He said, 'Dada had said,' Now your life has changed completely.  I did not understand what that meant at that time but later I completely agreed with him.'
