Minister for Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Talasani Srinivas Yadav on Friday said eliminating the middlemen system in development of fisheries benefitted fishermen in the State immensely. Releasing fishlings in Pedda Cheruvu of Kodad as part of the fifth phase of the free fishlings distribution to fishermen’s cooperative societies, Srinivas Yadav said the State government had given fishing rights in reservoirs and irrigation tanks to the fishermen community and eliminated the middlemen and contract system for growing fish in irrigation tanks.

“It has financially benefitted the community and brought light into their lives. The incomes of fishermen have gone up manifold after the State government started releasing fishlings in water bodies,” the Minister said, adding that the Fisheries Department had also provided mini-trucks and mopeds to the fisherfolk to sell their catch in different places. Stating that the second phase of the sheep distribution would be taken up soon, he said efforts were on to further strengthen the Animal Husbandry Department. He said an artificial insemination center for cattle would be launched in Kodad as a pilot project.

Earlier, on his way to Kodad, Srinivas Yadav spoke to the media during his brief halt at Suryapet. He said 81 crore fishlings and five crore prawn seedlings would be released into reservoirs and irrigation tanks in the State this year. Srinivas Yadav also said the State government accorded top priority to the welfare of farmers. “The dream of the Chief Minister to turn Telangana into a State with one crore acres of fertile land would soon come true,” he added.
