Mamata Banerjee, the supremo of the Trinamool Congress, announced the new National Working Committee on Friday at a meeting held at her residence here, where she not only struck a balance between newcomers and old guards, but also increased her control over the party by placing her loyalists at every level of the organisation.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dissolved all party ranks and constituted a 20-member working committee last week. Despite the fact that Abhishek Banerjee has been reinstated as Trinamool's All-India General Secretary, he has trimmed his wings by appointing three National Vice-Presidents — Subrata Bakshi, Chandrima Bhattacharya, and Yashwant Sinha — the first two of whom are close to the Chief Minister.

To give the party a national face, Sinha was appointed Vice-President. Aroop Biswas, a state minister, has been named the party's Treasurer. Amit Mitra, Partha Chatterjee, Sudip Bandopadhyay, Anubrata Mondal, Aroop Biswas, and Firhad Hakim are among the new Trinamool National Working Members of the committee. Sinha and Mitra have been entrusted with directing the party's international and economic policies.

The party's new spokespersons will be Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, and Mahua Moitra, while Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor Firhad Hakim, the Chief Minister's most trusted aide, will be in charge of coordinating between the National Working Committee and the party's chairperson, the Chief Minister herself. As rumours of discontent in the ranks burst wide open last week, Banerjee dissolved the party's national office-bearer committee, which included her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, and constituted a 20-member working committee.

Banerjee stacked the new committee with party veterans, including Abhishek, to demonstrate her solid grip over the party. Trinamool also revealed the names of mayors for three local corporations following the meeting. The mayor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation will remain Krishna Chakraborty, while the chairperson will be Sabyasachi Dutta, who just left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to rejoin the Trinamool.

Asansol Municipal Corporation will be led by Bidhan Upadhyay, while Chandernagore Municipal Corporation will be led by Ram Chakraborty. Banerjee appointed Gautam Deb as Mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation on February 14.
