India's EV charging infrastructure is expanding as the country progressively adopts electric vehicles. In the last four months, the number of public EV charging stations has increased by 2.5 times across nine major cities, according to the Ministry of Power.

Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Surat, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad are among the cities with public charging stations. In India, there are now roughly 1,640 public electric car charging stations, with 940 of them located in these cities. Between October 2021 and January 2022, India added 678 public EV charging stations in these nine cities, according to the Ministry of Power.

On January 14 of this year, the Ministry of Power issued revised consolidated Guidelines and Standards for EV Charging Infrastructure. According to the ministry, the government has taken a number of steps to promote the manufacture and adoption of electric cars in the country. Electric cars have begun to penetrate the Indian market, according to the report, thanks to a significant expansion in public EV charging infrastructure.

The ministry further stated that the Centre has undertaken a 360-degree effort to improve public charging infrastructure by working with business and public organizations such as BEE, EESL, PGCIL, and NTPC. Many commercial companies have also showed interest in building EV charging stations.

The Centre intends to continue expanding service to other cities in the following days. Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum, for example, have announced the construction of 22,000 electric vehicle charging stations across towns and along national highways. IOC has committed to construct 10,000 electric vehicle charging stations, BPCL will install another 7,000, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation will install the remaining 5,000.

The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has already installed 439 electric vehicle charging stations and expects to add 2,000 more over the next year. So far, BPCL has installed 52 charging stations, while HPCL has installed 382 stations.
