Varanasi: 17 people died in Varanasi in the last 24 hours due to heat stroke and dehydration. On Wednesday, 13 people died in the district and divisional hospitals. Due to deaths in nearby districts also,  the last rites at both the crematoria on the banks of the Ganga have to wait a long time for the last rites. Mrityunjay Bind (45), a liquor salesman and a labourer from Ghughulpur (Jalalipatti) died near Nathupur gate in Ugapur (Chaubeypur) on Wednesday.

The body of a 47-year-old man was found in Manduwadih and a 45-year-old man on the railway track near Yamunanagar Colony (Sheopur). They have not been identified. It is being said that his death was also due to heat stroke. While the divisional hospital reported five deaths on Wednesday, six succumbed to their injuries at the hospital's threshold. Eight people lost their lives in the district hospital. Five of them died on arrival at the hospital.

The continuous deaths have doubled the pressure of the bodies at the post-mortem house in Sheopur. It has the ability to hold 12 corpses. Additional bodies have to be kept out. The bodies kept in the mortuary of the divisional hospital are rotting. There is only a place to keep six bodies in the deep freezer here. Haricharan Singh, SIC of divisional hospital, said the condition of people is getting so serious due to heat that many die on arrival at the hospital.
