New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday heard the matter of donations received by political parties through Electoral Bonds. The apex court said it will look into the matter on December 6 whether to refer the petitions challenging the existing law to a larger bench for hearing. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna also said that it was a very important matter and sought the cooperation of the Attorney General and the Solicitor General on it.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, told the court that the modalities of receiving donations through electoral bonds are "absolutely transparent". Electoral bonds have been brought in as an alternative to cash donations in an attempt to bring transparency in donations to political parties. The apex court was hearing PILs filed by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), CPM and some other petitioners.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for ADR, had placed the matter before the then Chief Justice NV Ramana on April 5. He said that this is a very important subject and it should be heard immediately.
