Big decision taken by religious leaders of mosques regarding loudspeakers

Mumbai: Amid the controversy over loudspeakers, Mumbai's Muslim clerics have taken a big step. According to the verdict, now the morning's azaan will be without a loudspeaker. A meeting of religious leaders of around 26 mosques in south Mumbai was held late on Wednesday night. The meeting said that in compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court, now the morning azaan will be given without a loudspeaker. The meeting was held at the 'Sunni Badi Masjid' in the area, in which Muslim clerics from Madanpura, Nagpada and Agripada areas of Byculla gathered.

It was decided in the same meeting that as per the court's decision, there will be no azaan on loudspeakers in these areas from 10 pm to 6 am. Following this, the morning azaan at mumbai's popular Minara mosque was given without a loudspeaker. Mns chief Raj Thackeray had warned the Maharashtra government that if azaan was held outside mosques from May 4, the Hanuman Chalisa would be recited there. Earlier, Raj Thackeray had also warned about the loudspeaker controversy in the wake of his speech in Aurangabad. In this case, an FIR was also lodged against him in Aurangabad, accusing him of making inflammatory speeches.

On the same controversy, Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil had said that the government will soon come out with guidelines related to azaan. The Director General of Police and the Mumbai Police Commissioner have been directed to formulate a joint policy in connection with loudspeakers. The Dgp of Maharashtra had directed the police to strictly follow the Supreme Court's guidelines and law regarding loudspeakers. The Supreme Court's guidelines are that loudspeakers should not be used from 10 pm to 6 am. However, it can be played in closed places such as auditoriums, conference halls, community and banquet halls.
