Hanoi: As tensions with Beijing in the South China Sea remain high, the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan will make a rare visit to the port city of Danang in Central Vietnam on Sunday.

The ship will dock in Danang on Sunday afternoon and remain there until June 30, according to a spokesperson for the Vietnamese ministry of foreign affairs, which was quoted in the local media. Reuters' requests for comment from the spokesperson were not answered.

Only three US aircraft carriers have visited since the end of the Vietnam War, including the USS Ronald Reagan. To commemorate 25 years since the Vietnam War's end in 1975, the USS Theodore Roosevelt made a port call in Vietnam in 2020.

In light of Hanoi's ongoing territorial disputes with Beijing in the South China Sea, Washington is attempting to strengthen its formal relations with Vietnam this year. Nearly all of the region's waters, including the exclusive economic zones of Vietnam and other nations, are claimed by China.

The energy-rich sea, which contains vital routes for international trade, is frequently traversed by US carriers. Chinese ships frequently follow the warships.
According to Taiwan's defence ministry, the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong travelled through the delicate Taiwan Strait on Wednesday with a group of escorting vessels.
