Former Chief Ministers in Assam will no longer be entitled to security protection or a government residence as of January 1, 2022, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Former Chief Ministers would not be given with security cover from the next term onwards, according to Sarma, unless there is a real threat to the person concerned. He went on to say that a review of the threats would be conducted, and that based on that, the former CMs would be given security coverage, and that there would be no room for the facility simply because he or she had held a position.

Sarma clarified, however, that the new regulation will only apply to the next term, and that past Chief Ministers Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Sarbananda Sonowal will be able to continue with their present arrangements. He also stated that the amount of cars and staff following him while he goes about the city will be reduced. CM Sarma's convoy now has 22 cars, but that number will drop to 7-8 vehicles monday.
