A deep secret is hidden behind the snake's tongue being cut in two parts, which is mentioned in the Mahabharata. There is a very interesting story related to the tongue of snakes in the Mahabharata written by Maharishi Ved Vyasa. According to the Mahabharata, Maharishi Kashyap had 13 wives. Kadru was also one of them. All snakes are children of Kadru. The name of another wife of Maharishi Kashyap was Vinata, whose son is Birchraj Garuda. Once both Maharishi Kashyap's wives Kadru and Vinata saw a white horse. Seeing it, Kadru said that the tail of this horse is black and Vinata said that it is not white, both bet on this matter.

Kadru then told his snake sons that they should reduce their size and cling to the tail of the horse so that the tail of the horse looks black and she wins the bet. Some snakes refused to do so, then Kadru cursed his sons that you will be burst in the King Janmejaya's yajna (Yagya). Hearing the curse, all the snake sons clung to the tail of that white horse, according to their mother, which made that horse's tail appear black. Due to losing the bet, Vinata became the maid of Kadru. When Vinata's son Garuda came to know that his mother had become a maid, he asked Kadru and his snake sons to bring such an item so that his mother would be freed from their slavery. Then the snake sons said that if you bring us the nectar (Amrit) from heaven, then your mother will be freed from the slavery of our mother.

At the behest of the snakes, Garuda brought the nectar urn from heaven and placed it on a kusha (a kind of streaked grass). He asked all the snakes to take a bath before drinking the nectar. At the behest of Garuda, all the snakes went to bathe, but in the meantime, Devraj Indra came there and went to heaven again with nectar urn. When all the snakes came after bathing, they saw that there is no nectar on the Kusha. After this, the snakes started licking the grass on which the nectar urn was placed. They felt that some fraction of nectar must have fallen, but they did not get the nectar itself, but due to the grass, the tongue of all snakes cut into two pieces. For this reason, the snake's tongue is divided into two parts.
