Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia has made it to the quarterfinals of the French Open 2023 with a historic victory over Spain's Sarah Soribes Tormo on Monday. Haddad Maiya defeated Sara 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-5 in the longest women's singles match of 2023 that lasted three hours and 51 minutes over Kotter Suzanne Lenglen. With this victory, Haddad Maia has become the first Brazilian woman to reach the French Open quarter-finals in 55 years. Before her, Brazil's Maria Bueno reached the quarter-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon in 1968 as well as made it to the semi-finals of the US Open. Apart from these two players, no Brazilian woman has played the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam event.

"First of all, I would like to thank the people who came to watch the match and enjoyed it. My thanks especially to the Brazilian people. I think the emotions of both of us are always associated with this match. It's not easy when we play against big players in big events. We played against each other for about four hours. I am happy that I did not give up and tried my best. I think that's why I deserve this win. ''

In the quarterfinals, Haddad Maiya will face Tunisia's Ons Jabur, who defeated American Bernanda Pera 6-3, 6-1 in the pre-quarterfinals. 7th seed Jabur took only 63 minutes to defeat her American opponent in a one-sided match. Meanwhile, Norway's Casper Rudd defeated Chile's Nicolas Jerry 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-5 in a thrilling men's singles match. Fourth seed Rudd struggled for three hours and 20 minutes, but she managed to defeat the unseeded Jerry. In the next round, Rudd will face either Denmark's Holger Rune or Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo.
