The Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved three major initiatives on Thursday. These include the extension of the fortified rice distribution scheme, the creation of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Gujarat, and improvements to border infrastructure in Rajasthan and Punjab. Fortified Rice Scheme Gets Rs 17,082 Crore Approval

In a bid to combat nutritional deficiencies across India, the Cabinet approved the continuation of the fortified rice distribution scheme. This program, which will run from July 2024 to December 2028, covers important government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).

The fortified rice initiative aims to tackle issues like anaemia and nutrient deficiencies. The scheme will be entirely funded by the central government and is set to benefit approximately 80 crore people across the country.

National Maritime Heritage Complex in Gujarat

The Cabinet also greenlit the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat. The project will be completed in two phases, with Phase 1A estimated to cost Rs 1,238.05 crore. Funding for this phase will come from Major Ports, the Ministry of Defence, and the Ministry of Culture.

In addition, Phase 1B and Phase 2 have received in-principle approval, with funds expected to be sourced from voluntary contributions. Phase 1B includes the construction of a Light House Museum, at an estimated cost of Rs 266.11 crore. This project is expected to generate 15,000 direct jobs and 7,000 indirect jobs, benefiting local communities, researchers, tourists, and various organizations.

Border Infrastructure Development in Rajasthan and Punjab

The Cabinet has approved the construction of 2,280 kilometers of roads in the border areas of Rajasthan and Punjab, with a total investment of Rs 4,406 crore. This initiative aligns with the government’s focus on enhancing infrastructure in border regions to improve rural livelihoods, travel, and connectivity to national highways.

This border development project is part of a larger effort to transform these regions by providing better roads, telecom services, water supply, healthcare, and education facilities, ensuring the development of vibrant communities in these areas.
