New Delhi:  Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O'Brien has moved Election Commission (EC) citing that the coverage provided to cover PM Modi's Kedarnath Yatra is a violation of the MCC. Citing that the campaigning for the 7th and the last phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019 was over on May 17, O'Brien writes a letter to EC and urged that the broadcast of Modi's visit to the Kedarnath shrines should be 'stopped'. Shortly later, West Bengal Congress also wrote to the Election Commission seeking action against PM Modi for 'violating the MCC'.

"even though the Election Campaign for the last phase of polling for 2019 Lok Sabha is over as long back on 17th May 2019 at 6 pm, surprisingly, Shri Narendra Modi's Kedarnath Yatra is being covered and widely televised for the last two days in all national as well as local media. This is a gross violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC)," O'Brien said in his letter.

"It is very unfortunate that the Election Commission, the highest body and the eyes and ears of the democratic process, remains blind and deaf to the gross violation of the MCC," he said, seeking immediate action on the 'unfair campaign, which is also morally wrong,' he further added.

On Saturday, PM Modi visited Kedarnath and spent hours inside a holy cave. Photographs of Modi meditating inside the cave and visiting the shrine were widely circulated in the media. On Sunday, he visited Badrinath Shrine.
