Kolkata: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday (12 May 2022) arrested the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader's son at Jagdal in Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. District police officials said the arrest was made in connection with the seizure of 45 country-made bombs outside the residence of local BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP Arjun Singh in March this year.

Accused Namit Singh is the son of TMC councilor Sunita Singh from ward number 8 of Jagdal Municipality under Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat. Arjun Singh won from Barrackpore seat after leaving TMC and joining BJP in 2019. On March 12, a bomb was found near Arjun Singh's residence. He had alleged that the ruling party had hatched a conspiracy to attack him and his family members. He said earlier this month the NIA took over the investigation. Earlier the local police was probing the matter. An official of Jagdal police station has told that, 'A five-member team of NIA arrested Namit Singh after interrogating him for hours.'

On the other hand, Jagdal's TMC MLA Somnath Shyam alleged that NIA is working on the instructions of the BJP MP. Shyam said, 'Some of Arjun Singh's followers told the local police where the bombs were kept. Should we conclude that BJP workers planted bombs to trap TMC councilor Sunita Singh and her son? Arjun Singh called Namit a suspect in front of the media and said that he would ask the NIA to investigate the matter. We will fight this matter in court. At the same time, Arjun Singh has said that he did not influence the NIA in any way. He said, 'I didn't blame anyone. I only said that if NIA can catch hardcore terrorists, it can easily catch a small crime of bombing. I thank NIA.'
