Birbhum:The results of the panchayat polls in West Bengal indicate an early lead for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), as the counting process commenced this morning.

According to the trends and results available on the State Election Commission site, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has emerged victorious in 942 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured 103 seats. The Congress party has currently secured 26 seats.

Based on the ongoing trends, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is leading in 2590 panchayat seats, while the BJP is leading in 664.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has managed to win 47 seats and is currently leading in 558.

The polling, which took place on July 8, witnessed instances of violence, resulting in repolling at 696 booths.

The counting process includes votes for the Gram Panchayats, as well as for Zilla Samitis and Zilla Parishads.

To ensure security, officials have deployed an adequate number of security forces at the counting centers, and CCTV cameras have been installed.

Earlier, security personnel resorted to a lathi charge to disperse a large crowd gathered outside a polling station in Howrah. They were reportedly attempting to enter the counting center.

Agnimitra Paul, the BJP MLA from Asansol South constituency, alleged that BJP counting agents were being denied entry at certain counting centers.

She also criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress for the violence that occurred during the panchayat polls.

"...people were murdered in this Panchayat election, and our CM & 'Bhaipo'—who made tall claims about a peaceful election—have not made any statement. There were incidents of firing and bombing in my constituency, along with instances of bogus voting. Therefore, we have no expectations regarding this election... There are reports of BJP counting agents being denied entry at a few counting centers... I am sitting here, and I have received information that there might be an attack this afternoon...," she stated.

The panchayat elections, which were considered a litmus test for the popularity of the Mamata Banerjee government in light of multiple arrests linked to an alleged teachers' recruitment scam, witnessed incidents of violence resulting in the unfortunate loss of at least 10 lives.

The panchayat elections took place on July 8, with approximately 5.67 crore voters deciding the fate of 2.06 lakh candidates.
