Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar resigned from his parliamentary position on Sunday, citing his dissatisfaction with the Bengal government's response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital.

In his resignation letter addressed to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sircar criticized the "unchecked overbearing attitude" of certain party members and the failure to address corruption within the government. He expressed frustration over not being able to have a private discussion with Banerjee for months and lamented the government's lack of action against corrupt officials.

Sircar stated, “I became increasingly disillusioned as the state government seemed quite unconcerned about corruption and the increasing strong-arm tactics of a section of leaders.” He voiced strong disapproval of corrupt officials receiving prominent positions and stated his inability to accept such practices.

The resignation follows widespread protests in Bengal triggered by the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital. Sircar criticized the TMC government for its inadequate response to the public outrage, accusing it of losing the trust of the people.

He added, “In all my years, I have not seen such angst and total no-confidence against the government.” Sircar expressed disappointment that the government’s punitive actions came too late and urged the party to adopt a non-confrontational approach to the protests, which he said were driven by a desire for justice rather than political motives.

Concluding his letter, Sircar announced his intention to step back from politics, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to fighting corruption, communalism, and authoritarianism.
