During the ongoing Winter Session, Derek O'Brien from Trinamool Congress faced suspension from the Rajya Sabha. The reason cited for this action was his behavior described as 'gross misconduct' and 'disobeying the Chair' while the session was in progress.

Despite being asked by the Rajya Sabha chairman to leave, Derek O'Brien remained inside, pressing for a conversation about a recent security breach. This breach involved two individuals jumping from the visitors' area into the Lok Sabha and setting off yellow smoke canisters.

The Rajya Sabha proceedings paused until 4 pm due to opposition uproar over Derek O'Brien's suspension from the TMC.

Expressing dismay over O'Brien's continuous presence, the Rajya Sabha Chairman remarked, "It's regrettable that suspended member Derek O'Brien is still here. His actions have hindered the House's normal functioning."

Upon the House reconvening, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar singled out O'Brien, cautioning him against disrupting proceedings and disregarding the Chair's directives.

Accusing Derek O'Brien of flouting the Chair's orders and causing disturbance, the Chairman permitted the Leader of the House, Piyush Goyal, to propose a motion regarding this matter.

The motion passed through a voice vote, and the chairman declared O'Brien's suspension from the House for the rest of the session.

During the vote, the Chair confirmed the adoption of the motion through a voice vote.

"The motion stands accepted. Derek O'Brien, a member, is suspended for the remaining duration of this session," declared the Chairman, while opposition members collectively protested with shouts of "No." They also raised slogans rejecting the suspension, emphasizing that they won't tolerate authoritarian behavior.

Derek O'Brien had been urging a discussion on the breach in Parliament security.

A notable security breach occurred during the ongoing Winter Session when, on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, two individuals breached security, entered the Lok Sabha, released colored smoke, and chanted slogans before being subdued by MPs.

It's worth noting that Derek O'Brien faced naming by the Chair during the Monsoon session as well but wasn't suspended then.
