CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated in the State Assembly on Wednesday that the state will commemorate Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary as the 'Day of Equality.'
"Baba Saheb Ambedkar's birthday, April 14, would be observed as the Day of Equality, for which the oath will be administered throughout Tamil Nadu," Stalin stated.
He also announced that a full-size bronze monument of Ambedkar will be placed in Chennai's Ambedkar memorial, and that a number of Ambedkar-related literature will be released after being translated into Tamil.
The state government's decision to designate Ambedkar Jayanti as the "Day of Equality" was applauded by all party representatives. "We appreciate the state government's concept," BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan told the state legislature. "The central government has taken various measures to introduce Ambedkar to the people; we applaud the state government's idea."
O Paneer Selvam, the coordinator and MLA of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), voiced his approval of the government's announcement.
Babasaheb Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer who battled against societal discrimination against untouchables (Dalits) and advocated women's and workers' rights. He was born on April 14, 1891. On December 6, 1956, he passed away.
