HYDERABAD: To strengthen the hygiene and healthcare of girl students across the State, the Telangana government will give 33 lakh adolescent health kits to girl students enrolled in public schools and junior colleges.

In accordance with a Government Order (GO), the kits will be supplied to girls students enrolled in government-run middle schools and colleges who are in the eighth through intermediate (second year) classes. The initiative will cost about Rs 70 crore and run for six months during the current academic year 2022–23 and for twelve months during 2023–24.

During the current academic year, 11 lakh kits will be given. A water bottle, six packs of sanitary napkins, and a zipper bag are included with the kit. 22 lakh kits will be given during the course of the upcoming academic year. There will be 12 packets of sanitary napkins in each kit.

Secretary of Health, Medical, and Family Welfare S. A. M. Rizvi issued the GO authorising an administrative budget of Rs 69.52 crore for the purchase and distribution of adolescent health kits. According to the GO, money from the National Health Mission (NHM) will be used to cover the cost.

The programme will be run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram.
As per the National Family Health Survey-5 report, about 32 percnet of young women between the ages of 15 - 24 use cloth as a sanitary napkin. Keeping this in view, the Telangana government had taken the step of distributing these kits, which would not only help in their hygiene, but also generate awareness among people. The distribution of adolescent health kit would also assist in increasing the attendance of girl students in schools and colleges.
