CHENNAI: On June 3, the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, a sports management business based in Kerala is organising a Cycle Rickshaw Racing League (CRRL) largely in Tamil Nadu.

The league intends to improve the quality of life of rickshaw riders through the use of sports management and sports engineering, according to officials from the Sports and Management Research Institute (SMRI), which is hosting the event.

"We are organising the Cycle Rickshaw Racing League as a tribute to former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, late M. Karunanidhi, who prohibited hand-pulled rickshaws and supported cycle rickshaws, asserting that everyone are born equal," stated B.T. Sijin, President, SMRI. He stated that the team would be boosting competition awareness in schools and colleges throughout Tamil Nadu.

"By buying a cycle rickshaw, one can become a CRRL team owner, and the rickshaw can be used by rickshaw drivers for a living during non-game days," the SMRI chief added. He also stated that SRMI would hold a rickshaw design competition for engineering and polytechnic students, with the best designer receiving a prize of Rs 10,000. The winning designer will join the SRMI technical team as well.
