Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi to wish Indian athletes ahead of the showpiece event. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues shared their messages on the video. The captain of the Indian National Hockey Team will be one of the flag bearers of the Indian contingent at the inaugural function and will be accompanied by renowned London Olympic bronze medallist boxer MC Mary Kom.
Noted wrestler Bajrang Punia will be the flag bearer of India for the closing ceremony to be held on August 8. IOA President Narinder Batra also confirmed that the total team for the Olympics will be about 126 athletes and 75 officers. The team comprises 56 percent men and 44 percent women. It has 76 quota places and will compete in about 85 medal posts. The Indian team will leave for Tokyo on July 17.
