SEOUL: The top diplomats of South Korea and the United States "strongly criticised" Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Saturday, according to the foreign ministry in Seoul.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong reiterated their "steadfast support" for Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence during their tele- conversation, according to the ministry. They also urged Moscow to end its military actions against Ukraine immediately.  Blinken reportedly commended South Korea for its loud support for Ukraine and pledged to join the international community's concerted reaction against Russia.

South Korea has pledged to support economic penalties on Russia, including export bans, as well as other initiatives to resolve the Ukraine crisis peacefully.

On Thursday, the United States imposed broad export restrictions on Russia, which might disrupt South Korea's shipments of high-tech commodities to Russia, such as semiconductors and electronic equipment.

According to the ministry, the top diplomats agreed to continue efforts for the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula based on a "fully coordinated" policy toward North Korea during their phone calls two weeks after their meeting in Hawaii.
