In a well planned execution of the operation by the Indian Army Intelligence Agencies at Meghalaya-Assam- Bangladesh Border, made ULFA(I) United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) leader, SS Col Drishti Rajkhowa along with four  accomplices SS Corporal Vedanta, YasinAsom, RopjyotiAsom and MithunAsom, to surrender, with a huge quantity of arms. Indian Army acted upon the information from the confirmed inputs and is the result of relentless pursuit over the last nine months.

Drishti Rajkhowa has long been in the wanted list of the ULFA insurgents. He was responsible for many illegal activities in lower Assam. The surrender is a major blow to the underground organisation and heralds a new dawn ushering in peace in the region. By this operation Indian Army again reaffirmed to the people that it always remains committed in maintaining peace and normalcy in the region.

The ULFA (I),  is demanding an independent state of Assam from a long time and the militant outfit was banned by the central government in 1990. Few months back,Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Union Minister Amit Shah is focused on resolving the ULFA issues in the northeast and bring peace to the region. The surrendered was the second-in-command of the militant group. He is believed to be a close confidante of Paresh Baruah, the so-called ‘commander-in-chief’ of ULFA (I). Sources said that second-line commander entered Meghalaya a few weeks ago from Bangladesh.
