Male: A 14-year-old boy in the Maldives reportedly died on Saturday due to alleged delays in obtaining approval for the use of an Indian-provided Dornier aircraft for his airlift. The boy, suffering from a brain tumor and stroke, needed urgent medical evacuation from Gaaf Alif Villingili to the capital city, Male. The family claims that President Mohammed Muizzu's refusal to grant approval contributed to the delay in arranging the medical evacuation. Despite the emergency request, the boy was transported to Male 16 hours later. This incident occurs amid recent tensions in diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.
Maldivian media reported that the family's requests to Island Aviation for immediate transportation were allegedly unanswered until Thursday morning, exacerbating the delay. The boy's father emphasized the need for an air ambulance in such critical cases. Aasandha Company Limited, which received the evacuation request, mentioned a technical problem with the flight at the last moment, preventing the planned diversion.
This tragic event has heightened concerns, with Maldives MP Meekail Naseem expressing the sentiment that people should not pay with their lives due to the President's animosity towards India.
It's essential to note that diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives have faced strains recently, particularly following derogatory comments made by Maldivian ministers towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
