Bengaluru: A tragic incident unfolded at the Attiguppe metro station in Bengaluru on Wednesday, as a person jumped in front of an oncoming metro rail on the Purple Line around 2:10 pm. The individual, who was waiting for the metro at the station, leaped onto the tracks upon the arrival of the train and was fatally struck. Security personnel swiftly responded to the scene, but the young man succumbed to his injuries. The police have taken custody of the body and initiated further procedures.

In response to the incident, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) stated that currently, train operations are limited to the stretch between Magadi Road and Whitefield, with no services running between Magadi Road and Chailaghatta. Metro officials emphasized the suspension of services in this segment.

This tragic event adds to a series of similar incidents occurring at Bengaluru Metro stations. Just a few weeks ago, Purple Line metro services were temporarily halted after another individual jumped onto the tracks at the viaduct area of the Kengeri metro station, disrupting services between Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Kengeri metro stations.

In a previous incident in January, a young man attempted to end his life by jumping onto the tracks as a train approached near a metro station. However, the quick response of the train's loco pilot, who applied emergency brakes upon spotting the individual, prevented a fatal outcome. Although the train partially struck the man, security personnel intervened promptly, and the individual was rescued. The BMRCL staff immediately halted the power supply to the train using the emergency trip system. This incident occurred at a Green Line station.

These distressing occurrences underscore the importance of addressing mental health concerns and implementing stringent safety measures at metro stations to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
